Stitch N Sew Cottage
A SIMPLE BEGINNING.
In 1939 the Eastern Iowa Cutting Room was as a non-profit organization that cut fabrics for churches and missions. By 1982, Ed & Niva Burkholder with Paul & Dorothy (daughter) Schumann, were asked to take the lead and Stitch N Sew Cottage began. In 1987, they relocated to their current building. Daugther-in-law, and current owner, Grace Schumann, purchased the store in 2004.
The vision of this business has always been to serve the needs of quilters in any way they can. So you will often find the staff helping customers with color coordinating, marking quilts, or understanding patterns.
You can browse over 3000 bolts of fabric in stock, hundreds of stencils to choose from, along with a variety of books and quilting notions. Though there are finished quilts and quilt tops for sale, you can also order custom-made quilts.
When visiting, you may also enjoy wandering the streets of downtown Kalona where you can tour the sidewalk quilt blocks. The town is also known for their Historical Village, Quilt & Textile Museum, Amish Tours, a variety of eateries, and antique shops.
